The Village and the Avoriaz Climb

Today, we woke up early and headed to Morzine and our VIP access to the Village and the racer sign-in. It seemed like thousands of people were milling around to see their favorite teams. Our group had access to the area where the riders were. There are a few autographs and pretty good pictures we’ll be talking about for a long time. The Versus TV crew was out interviewing the GC contenders before they hit their 204k stage today. Then, we had a place to watch the peloton roll out. It was pretty special and an amazing way to get up close and personal with the tour.

Then, maybe you saw it.. It was the last 13 kilometers of Stage 8, from Station des Rousse to Morzine-Avoriaz on Sunday. Today, our group headed up the hill, a pretty decent climb with fantastic views. The reward was a picnic lunch at the top of the climb. This climb is a prettty steady 6-9 percent grade, so you can get a good rhythm going, which we did. Of course, stopping to take pictures all along the way slowed a few of us down a little, but for us, it’s not a race! That’s for the peloton! We stopped in a restaurant in Morzine after our ride and watched Andy Schleck take yellow! A very good day all around.
