Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The town’s cobbled streets, old roofs, and warm stone walls give an exceptional heritage. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral, which is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos, remains one of the most popular cathedrals in the region. It’s well preserved, exquisite architecture is one reason France declared the Roman Catholic cathedral a national monument.

The centre of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is largely car-free. On a summer day, don’t be surprised to find the town’s center to be booming with people. The population is only around 10,000 people, but a number of tourists can always be found admiring the town’s loveliness.
